Food For Life

Today’s Scripture: John 6:35 – “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.'”

The peaches that are grown in the garden of Xi Wang-mu’s (pronounced Shee Wong moo) are reputed to be very special peaches. Imagine my surprise to find out that the gods are nourished by a steady diet of those special peaches that take thousands of years to ripen. They are called “the peaches of immortality.” To those who eat one will be granted long life; in fact, 3000 years from a single peach. (Mental_floss, Gabe, Luzier. November 2014)

Jesus did not mention peaches or any such fruit. He says that He is the bread of life. John 6:35 – “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.'” Consume this bread, and you are eating for eternity.

But not everyone believes what Jesus says. Some people listening to him on the shore of the Sea of Galilee are very skeptical – much as we are when we hear the myth of the Chinese peaches of immortality.

Jesus says, “Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life.” This is the first clue as to what He is talking about. Belief is the key to receiving the benefits of the bread of life.

We take communion every Sunday. Our eyes see grape juice and cracker. But with eyes of faith, we see the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

We are to understand that it is not the bread, but it is Man. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.”

Bread. Flesh. Love of the world. Love for the world. The bread that Jesus gives for the life of the world is nothing less than His own flesh.

Song: “Unto Thee Oh Lord”

Father God, we are so thankful that you have left us a memorial to stimulate our minds to remembering Your Son every week. We are brought before the reality of the price paid for hope of eternal life. Bless us God in your service. In Jesus’ name, amen.
