Devotions for Life

The “Highly” Educated

“Be diligent to present yourself to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of God” (2 Tim. 2:15).

While attending college in the 40’s, I came across those who made a career of their attendance, year after year pursuing further learning in what turned out to be a secure and organized life without worry about a vocational effort. In spiritual matters, most church members stand above those we associate daily. Why? In most cases, you and I have been richly educated in the word of God.

Instant Gratification

Ponder: I want what I want, and I want it now!

Scripture: “By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin” (Hebrews 11:24, 25, NKJV).

An old adage says, “Good things come to those who wait.” In this era of entitlement, many are unwilling to wait. Why save up for that car when I can get financing stretched out five years or longer? Why wait to pay cash for what I want when I can have it right now by putting it on my credit card? It’s called “Instant Gratification,” and it is epidemic in America. It’s the reason so many are turning to people like Dave Ramsey to help them learn to live within their means.

When Jesus looks down from the cross, or from heaven looking down on each of us on a daily basis, does he hear us say, “Truly this is the Son of God”? Perhaps we are too quick to say, “well I truly believe Jesus is the Son of God.” But on a daily basis, and on an hourly basis, is Jesus, our savior for all times?

“And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37 ).
