Devotions for Life

Text: “But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough; now, O Jehovah, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers” (I Kings 19:4).

Jezebel was making Elijah’s life miserable. The prophet of God was feeling “down.” Elijah was feeling so low that he wanted to die. There are many people who have reached a low point in their lives. Likewise, there are many types of feelings that bring on, and accompany, these low points.

Insight – Value In Hand

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matt. 16:26).

We watched in amazement as Joshua Bell, the fantastic violinist, played. We were even more amazed when we learned that he was playing on a 1713 Huberman Stradivarius violin for which he paid four million dollars. Wow! What a value in his hands!

A Stubborn Heart

Exodus 8:1-19

“This is the finger of God!” the magicians exclaimed to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh’s heart remained hard. He wouldn’t listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. (Exodus 8:19)

It’s tempting to believe, “If only I could see a miracle, I could believe in God.” For Pharaoh, each plague was a second chance to believe. When gnats infested Egypt, even the magicians agreed that this was God’s work—“the finger of God”—but still Pharaoh refused to believe.
