Devotions for Life

What A Gift

Today’s Scripture Reading: Joshua 1:7 – “Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.”

The fourth of July has come and gone. All the popular sites for viewing fireworks were filled to capacity. It seems to this writer that there was more flag waving this year than in years in the recent past. That led me to search concerning the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

Not An Option

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Colossians 4:2).

Many times Paul enjoins us to pray. Probably best known is 1 Thessalonians 5:17, which simply states, “Pray without ceasing.” The NIV says, “Pray continually.” Perhaps Paul remembered God’s admonitions to His people. In the Old Testament we can read such verses as “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6) and “Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens (Lamentations 3:41).

Around the Cross We See

Matthew 27:24

“When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.”

How many times have we been like weak Pilate? Too afraid to stand up for Jesus. Let’s be honest with ourselves. It happens too often. We struggle every day to be more like our Master. Yes, we are often like weak Pilate, but unlike Pilate, we today have a savior who died on the cross and washed away our sins and is always ready to help us be a strong faithful member of his church.
