Devotions for Life

A Life Cut Short

“What is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away” (James 4:14).
Ed and I went to the funeral today of a friend who died of pancreatic cancer. She was age-young by some standards. The preacher said “her life had been cut short.” Many of us can think of loved ones and friends who died at a young age.

Anyone Home?

“So watch,! You don’t know the day or the exact hour when I will come” (Mt. 25:13).
The idea is that Christians have a grand hope and assurance of the Lord Himself that they will be taken home to heaven on the last day of the earth, but it remains painful and terrifying to imagine what that day will be like. Christ’s second coming and the final judgment of each individual will be in the midst of fire and brimstone and earth laid barren ready for destruction.

Spiritual Discernment

“But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil” (Heb 5:14 NASU).
God demands that Christians develop a keen ability to discern both good and evil. In a society that seldom sees anything evil unless it could put someone in prison it needs a regular dose of this medicine.
