Devotions for Life

“Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. . .”

But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God-Psalms 40:17
Each morning we awaken to go about our daily activities not knowing what the day will bring into our lives. It may be success or it could be failure. Perhaps it will be joy and happiness or it may be pain and heartache. We just do not know what will befall us from one moment to the next. Like Gideon of old we sometimes cry out “Why.” Why this burden or distress? Why this hardship? Why this sickness?

The Prayer Of Our High Priest # 4

“Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words which You gave Me I have given them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me” (John 17:7-8).
Just before His prayer Jesus spoke of the Spirit who would make known His words to them. Jesus identified that anything that is His is also the Father’s (John 16:12-15).

The Marshmallow Test

“Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable”(1 Corinthians 9:25 NAU).
Have you heard of Walter Mischel’s famous marshmallow test?
In 1970, Mischel conducted a test of willpower by placing preschoolers in front of a marshmallow and gave them a choice. They could eat it right away, or wait 15 minutes and get a second one. He discovered that regardless of the obvious benefit, two thirds of the children chose to eat the marshmallow immediately instead of waiting 15 minutes to have two.
