Devotions for Life

Today’s Scripture: Genesis 9:13 – “I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.”

And Californian’s cheer for the recent rainfall! It was refreshing to the land. Along with the rain one may have spotted a rainbow in the sky. From my youth I learned about the rainbow. It was a symbol of the promise God made. He promised to not destroy the earth with floods again. I eventually learned that there was more to that rainbow.

An Invitation From The King

Text: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
My elderly uncle, who I enjoy listening to as he relates stories of a very interesting life, tells of the time when he drove a bus for a famous singing group.
While traveling with one of three singing groups, a member of one of the groups decided to give his friend “the king,” a call. Elvis was doing a show in nearby Las Vegas and invited all of them to front row seats to his show. After the show, Elvis told them he had an entire upper floor rented and an all night banquet planned. They were invited to attend that as well.

Hold Fast And Hold Forth

Ponder: The gospel of Christ – Life and Light
Scripture: “Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life . . .” (Philippians 2:14-16a, NKJV).
Today’s Scripture is one of Paul’s trademark (enormously long!) sentences. Let’s narrow the focus to the last phrase: “holding fast the word of life.”On one occasion, when numerous disciples had become offended and were leaving Him, Jesus asked the twelve if they, too, wanted to go away. Peter perceptively replied, “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).
