Devotions for Life

The Wager

Today’s Verse: “We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7 NIV).

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) made an argument for the truthfulness of God’s existence based upon “a wager.”
“If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing.” Since reason alone may not provide undeniable proof for some, they are left with either acceptance or denial. But if they accept God and they are wrong, they are none the worse than if they did not accept him. But if they deny God and are wrong, the consequences are tremendous. The best option is to accept God.

Our Defense

“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15 NAU).

Today, Christians are mocked, ridiculed and even persecuted for their faith, yet we do not react with vengeance or violence, but for anyone to say one word of criticism about Mohammed or Allah, or the Koran there are serious consequences to pay.

Respect and Honor

Today’s verse: “Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor” (Rom 13:7 NIV).

Did Paul insult the Athenians when he began to share with them the good news of salvation in Christ? Remember, while Paul was waiting in Athens for his friends, he was deeply moved to anger at all the idols in the city. Paul was brought before those philosophers who were curious men, and who wanted to hear Paul tell them about his faith.
