Devotions for Life

The Bell Ringer

“I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea, which were in Christ” (Gal. 1:22).
In over sixty years in our city, working in public schools and as a Lord’s church preacher, I’ve met thousands of young people and parents, a number of church members, and I no longer match faces with names. Opening 30 years of albums or church directories, there’s little connection except vivid experiences.

Jesus’ Goodness And The Fruit Of Goodness

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, …; against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Jesus revealed God to us while He walked among mankind (John 1:14 and Hebrews 1:3a). So as we look at the fruit of the Spirit, we need to see it through Jesus’ manifestation of the fruit.
The sixth fruit of the Spirit is goodness. This is not being good; it is doing good. Goodness is bestowing undeserved good deeds upon others. Human nature is such that we help those who will be able to help us in our time of need.

Building On The Wrong Lot

Text: “Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

A couple, in Florida, hired a contractor to build a house on the beach. Months later, as the $600,000 house neared completion, it was discovered that the house was constructed on the wrong lot. Oops! Jesus warned about building on a bad foundation resulting in the fall of the house (Matthew 7:26-27).
