The Way To Heaven

Text: “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:2-3).
As a little boy waited for his mother to come out of a store he was approached by a man who asked, “Son, can you tell me where the post office is?”
The boy replied, “Sure, just go straight down the street a couple of blocks and turn to your right.”
The man thanked the boy and said, “I’m the new preacher in town and I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.”

Cruelty is Criminal

“You are not to boil a young goat in the milk of its mother” (Ex. 23:19b).

This statute in Israel may seem odd to most readers. Most current scholars believe this is a prohibition against a pagan custom that sought divine blessings through this practice. The Ugarit literature discovered in 1930 certainly contains references to a similar practice used in the practice of the fertility cults.

Depart From Me! No, Follow Me

“But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, ‘Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!'” (Luke 5:8).

What would bring a man to ask Jesus to depart from him? Why did Peter feel so unworthy to be in the presence of Jesus? In the first place, Peter was hesitate in his obedience. He may not have argued with Jesus about the request to fish again that morning after fishing all night and catching nothing, but there was hesitancy. Peter didn’t say, “Hey Jesus, you’re just a carpenter, and I’m the big fisherman on this lake, and I know how to fish, so don’t you think I know this will be a futile effort?” But his actions would not have been his choice.
