What Are We Communicating?

“Then the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for Your servant is listening'” (1 Sam 3:10 NASU).
I recently learned that there are more than 200,000 words in the English language. We, however, only use approximately 500 of them in our daily lives. Of course, there are more than 500 words in our vocabulary, but much of that is recognition vocabulary, words we recognize and know but don’t use. These 500 common words have about 1,400 definitions, and this is the reason there is so much misunderstanding, and adds challenges to good communication.

“Fighting Fire With Fire”

Abigail Van Buren, best known for her famous “Dear Abby” column, was once the queen of witty advice. On one particular occasion she said something especially thought provoking: “People who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes.”

Looking For An Eternal City

“Cast thy burden upon the Lord and he shall sustain thee; he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psalms 55:22).
I know not why but for the past several days the chorus of a beautiful song has been echoing through my mind:
“Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Calvary, Calvary;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Jesus is very near.”
