The Word Is Not Chained

Today’s Verse: “For which (the gospel, rr) I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained” (2 Timothy 2:9 NIV).
In the Middle Ages it was not uncommon to find the pulpit Bibles chained to the pulpits. Whether this was to prevent the common people from reading the Bible for themselves or, as some claim in defense of the practice, the production of hand written copies of the Bible were so expensive they had to prevent thieves from stealing them. In light of the persecution of those who tried to put the Bible in the common people’s hands, I believe the former is the true explanation!

Wilted Roses

Today’s Bible Verse: “As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, ‘That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you'” (Acts 24:25 NIV).
A young lady was surprised one day when she received a gift of roses from a wealthy woman in town. Upon opening the box she found to her bewilderment roses that were wilted and the petals falling off. Many things went through her mind assuming, for example, that the florist had failed to deliver them on time. Later that day, she met the woman on the street and thanked her for the roses.

Good Only For Goodness’ Sake?

Today’s Bible Passage: “Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied. Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about'” (Gen 22:1-2 NIV).
How can you tell a man is lazy? If he has nothing to do, you can’t say he’s lazy. If he’s too ill to do anything, you can’t tell if he’s lazy. But a man might be lazy even if he has nothing to do, or too ill to do anything.
