Devotions for Life

You Just Don’t Get It!

“Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word” (John 8:43 NAU).

As C. S. Lewis was about to sit for his entrance exam at Oxford, his nonchalant attitude about it greatly troubled his father, but in light of the fact that C. S. was sure that he would soon be in the infantry army fighting in W.W.I, he felt it was insane to waste anxiety on anything so hypothetical as his postwar life. His father seemed unable to fathom C. S.’s attitude. Reflecting on this, he said of his father, “He could never empty, or silence, his own mind to make room for an alien thought” (Surprised By Joy, 102).

It’s Just You And Me, Lord

Ponder: Do you feel like you’re the only one faithfully serving God?

Scripture: “Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him” (1 Kings 19:18, NKJV).

My mother used to say that someone who was really down in the dumps was “as blue as a gizzard”! If you’ve seen uncooked chicken gizzards, you understand. The prophet Elijah was as blue as a gizzard in First Kings chapter nineteen. He just wanted to die. “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers” (v. 4).

Worship Is

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship” (Romans 12:1).

Many Christians view worship as coming together on Sunday morning. To them, worship is hearing someone pray, sing hymns, and listening to a sermon. Some people think of worship as what is done only when we come together. Yet, we are told that worship is giving ourselves to God. Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37b).
