Devotions for Life

A God Of Multiple Chances

“So stay awake, because you do not know the day when your Master is coming” (Matt. 24:42).
The admonition to stay awake brings back memories of college days in Los Angeles when a young boy from Missouri attracted to the nearby mountains, the ocean, and steady diet of sunshine and warmth. Too many times, such thoughts brought me close to sleep and I’d find I’d missed out on what the instructor deemed important.

“And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all” (I Thessalonians 5:14).
When I first started teaching school, we teachers were trained in a program called Magic Circle. The goal was to let students voice their inner feelings. One rule was that no students could criticize what another student said. They were to be supporting and kind in their words. Although I did not agree with all the tenants of the program, I do believe that all students – indeed, all people, can benefit from an occasional pat on the back.

Moral Delimmas

“. . . that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ” (Phil 1:10).
Everyone faces them. Choices. Should you or shouldn’t you? Maybe the best choice is the lesser of two evils. Or, perhaps I should choose whatever produces the greatest good. On my left hand are pleasures, on my right is unhappiness, should I not choose pleasure?
