Heads Or Tails?

Text: “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul” (Mark 8:36 NASV).

Heads or tails?   The coin toss has been used for ages, for many reasons.  “Coin flipping as a game was known to the Romans as “navia aut caput” (ship or head), as some coins had a ship on one side and the head of the emperor on the other” (Wikipedia).  It is used to settle disagreements.  It has been used to determine who goes first at a game.  Simply put, it helps to choose between two alternatives.

Where Do You Turn?

“Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life'” (John 6:68).
In 1980, one of the most disturbing psychological horror movies was released, titled, “The Shining.” The psychopath murderer died in the end by being led into a tall hedge maze by a little boy and losing his way out.  He dies in the freezing cold.

“Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, ‘Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on'” (Mark 12:43-44).

In our giving of money, resources, time, and self do we really sacrifice?  Edgar A. Guest wrote:

When he has more than he can eat
To feed a stranger’s not a feat.

When he has more than he can spend

It isn’t hard to give or lend.

Who gives but what he’ll never miss

Will never know what giving is.

He’ll win few praises from his Lord

Who does but what he can afford.

The widow’s mite to heaven went

Because real sacrifice it meant.
