Devotions for Life

“Restore My Soul”

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

How long have you been a Christian?  Ten years?  Twenty years?  Longer?  If it has been a while since you believed in Jesus as your Savior and put Him on in baptism, do you still feel the joy and enthusiasm that you felt then?  Sometimes, we do not.  The new has worn off.  You have heard it over and over.  You may even take God and the sacrifice He made through His Son for granted.

The signs are many.  Sermons don’t hold your attention.  Your mind wanders during prayers at worship services.  Your own prayer life has grown weak and sparse.  You find yourself arguing with Satan instead of chasing him away.  Sometimes you give in to “little sins.”  Your love for your church family has grown cold.  It doesn’t matter if you miss a worship service or two.  Your Bible gathers dust on the shelf, or maybe you don’t know where it is.  Telling God’s good news is very low on your priority list.

If this sounds like you, now is the time to restore your soul.  You have been away from God too long.  Your faith has faltered because your heart is not in touch with God.  You are weary because you need more strength from prayer and the reassurances you can get from God’s Word.  Your love for God and His Son is lukewarm because Satan almost has you.

God is waiting, watching, wanting you to come home.  In love He reaches out to you.  He will take you back into His fold and forgive you.  God through His Word will remove all doubt and fear, and your faith will be renewed.  He will restore your faith and courage to work for Him.  Like David, you then can “teach transgressor your ways, and sinners shall be converted unto You” (Psalm 51:12:13).

Song: “Restore My Soul”

Prayer: Father, restore us through Your Word.  Help us to never grow lukewarm in our love for You.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

What Is Religion?

“If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless.  Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of God is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and keep oneself unstained by the world” (James 1:26-27).

What is religion?  Men measure it by creeds, doctrine, and by conduct.  Religion is man’s master passion.  It is what we will stand firm on whether we are a Christian, Jew, Muslim, Atheist or anything else.

“I’ll Be A Friend”

“The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, “Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ (Luke 7:34).

We recently lost a highly esteemed lady who touched thousands, if not millions, of lives through her life and life’s work.  Maya Angelou has left us her wisdom and insights that will bless generations to come.
