Devotions for Life

A Used Up Allotment

“The years of our life are seventy, even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away” (Ps. 90:10).

Having reached the limits set forth in Moses’ words, time seems to be winging its way.  Though my watch seems to keep a regular beat, the days have shortened and those yearly celebrations of birth have rapidly increased.  Even the song leader keeps checking the time and announcing that due to the lateness of the hour we will sing only one verse of the closing song.  And the hymn?  “Take Time To Be Holy”!  which is the best of ideas but an imperfect announced title!

“How Shall They Hear?”

“Who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth” (I Timothy 2:4).

Ed and I were returning to Denver from Vail, Colorado.  Motorhomes, eighteen-wheelers, trucks pulling trailers, and cars filled all three lanes on I-70 East.  We rounded a long, descending curve, and what I saw made me cry out in fear and concern.  In the middle of the inner lane lay a large, yellow dog. It had evidently fallen from a vehicle and was hurt and in pain.  It could not get up.  A car had stopped about ten feet above where the dog lay, and a woman had exited from a car stopped about thirty feet downhill.  She was carrying a coat to wrap around the dog.  A truck had stopped on the shoulder of the outside lane.

Part Of The Family

Ponder: Your status as a member of God’s family.

Scripture: “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:18 NKJV).

The song is true – we really are the “house (family) of God . . . the church of the living God (1 Timothy 3:15). “Now, therefore, you are . . . members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). Christians are children of the same Heavenly Father (2 Corinthians 6:18).
