Devotions for Life

No Retreat

“But we are not of them that shrink back into perdition; but of them that have faith unto the saving of the soul” (Hebrews 10:39).

We are engaged in an incredible war.  The battles take place in our hearts.  We are not fighting “against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, and against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

“And having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace” (Ephesians 6:15).
In the section on the armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-17, we are told that the hobnailed sandal of the Roman soldier represents the gospel of peace.  The foot gear of the Roman soldier enabled him to stand firm when in battle.  Their foot gear also was essential in helping the Roman soldier march thirty miles a day.  The Christian’s faith in the Gospel, the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Jesus (I Corinthians 15:1-4) enables us to stand firm.  Faith in the Gospel also helps us go the distance.

Doing The Hard Things

“My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me, not as I will, but as you will” (Matt. 26:39).

Too often, we find ourselves battling our will, our pride, our vanity and our ego as they stand between us and Jesus. In Psalm 51:17, David said, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
