Devotions for Life

“Falling Short”

“. . . for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23 NASU).

The word in the Greek for “fall short” occurs 16 times in the New Testament, and is variously rendered. A few of these are “come short,” “fall short,” “lack.” The word for “sinned” originally meant “miss” such as slinging a stone or shooting an arrow and missing the target (cf. Judges 20:16).

Finding Our Voice

“. . . wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come” (1 Thess 1:10 NASU).

Inspired by the making of “Schindler’s List,” the video archive at the USC Shoah Foundation, which Steven Spielberg created 20 years ago, now includes more than 50,000 personal accounts of Holocaust survivors. This archive is available to schools across the globe. At a recent fund raising gala, attended by the President and famous celebrities, one of the most inspiring moments came when a survivor spoke. Celina Biniaz was one of the Jews Schindler saved. At 13, she worked in his factory, cleaning the machinery with her small hands. Now a grandmother whose story is included among the Holocaust testimonies, she said, “Oskar Schindler gave me my life, but Steven Spielberg gave me my voice.”

I do not wish to detract any worthy thought from this event or from Celina’s testimony as I make spiritual application from her words. Christians, however, are survivors in the real sense of the word. The souls of humanity are fighting against a “human cleansing” a holocaust of universal proportions. Satan is perpetrator of this evil scheme to destroy as many souls as he can.

The world looks on in denial as it did during WW2. But survivors are trying to get the truth out. Millions are going to the furnace of hell because few will take the danger seriously. Those who have escaped have found a voice. We are made bold in Jesus, who gave His life so that we could escape. Our efforts are needed to “snatch them out of the fire” (Jude 1:23).

Christian, have you lost your voice? You may be the only voice to save someone near you.

Song: Stand Up For Jesus

Dear Father, help us to speak boldly in the name of Jesus, warning the lost of the destruction that awaits unbelievers. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Saying Goodbye

“For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment” (Luke 16:28).

The Apostle Paul was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem. In fact, he was in so much of a hurry that instead of going to Ephesus, he called for the elders of the Ephesian church to meet him in Miletus (Acts 20:17). He had worked among them for three years. He loved them, and he had an urgent message for them.
