Uncle Bob

“A good name is to be more desired than great wealth” (Proverbs 22:1a).

Recently, Robert P. passed on. I knew him as uncle Bob. He left a great example. He was a man of integrity, a man who cared about family and others, and a man who always had time for others. He will definitely be missed. He became my uncle when I married one of his nieces, who preceded him in death. I count myself blessed to have known and to have been influenced by him.

Our Comforting God

“The Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction (II Cor. 1:3b, 4).

Fanny J. Crosby, the author of many of our beautiful hymns, was not born blind. When she was an infant, a man claiming to be a doctor put hot poultices on her eyes. The resulting scarring left her unable to see. As an adult, she declared that God had given her a special “soul vision” that enabled her to put her faith into song. Her spiritual vision helped her write such wonderful hymns as “All the Way My Savior Leads Me.”

Gussied up for God

Text: “Adorn yourself with eminence and dignity; and clothe yourself with honor and majesty” (Job 40:10).

I am thinking back on a time when one of our church members referred to my wife as being “gussied up.” When that term was used, directed toward my wife, my immediate thought was, “She is gussied up for God.””Gussied up” is an old expression meaning to dress, or adorn, or to decorate elaborately.
