Devotions for Life

God’s Pattern

Today’s Bible Verse: “Follow my example as I follow the example of Jesus” (1 Cor. 11:1).
Military historians indicate Benedict Arnold may have been a better trained officer and tactician than George Washington, certainly more engaging to the public and politically interesting. So what was the major difference between the two Revolutionary War leaders that made one “the father of his country” and the other a despised traitor?

The Richest Person

Today’s Bible Verse: “Tell those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which will soon be gone. . .” (1 Timothy 6:17 NLT).
For many years, I introduced my sermons on the world’s riches by noting my youthful 1930’s days at the 25th and Van Brunt Blvd. church in Kansas City, Missouri. The lobby was about ten feet above street level, so the paved floor slanted down to the Lord’s Table and any coins dropped usually ended up there. It’s amazing how much those coins were worth then and how much noise they’d make getting there before being placed in a collection plate.

Here am I send me

Ponder: My personal responsibility
Scripture: “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” (Isaiah 6:8, NKJV)
Have you heard about the four church members, Sam Somebody, Evan Everybody, Andy Anybody, and Norbert Nobody? Whenever a job needed done at church, Everybody figured Anybody could do that. But Anybody thought Somebody would surely do it. However, Somebody figured it was Everybody’s job. Of course Nobody ended up doing it. Poor Nobody was worked to death, so Nobody went to Heaven. As for Anybody, Everybody, and Somebody, you can finish the story.
