Devotions for Life

Genuine Obedience

“But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed” (Rom 6:17).

There’s a church in Charlotte, North Carolina, that has introduced a novel idea. They secretly built a water slide that leads to a small pool to serve as a baptistery. People known to have yet been baptized were ushered through a door out to the edge of the slide, and then were pushed on the slide and swirled down into the pool and were baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That Sunday was dubbed Splashtism Sunday!

What Samson’s Riddle Doesn’t Teach

“Out of the eater something to eat, and out of the strong something sweet” (Judges 14:14).

Recently, I wrote a devotional on this verse to show that from the life of Samson, God is teaching us that He can work wonders even through the bad things in our lives and even overrule our own stumbling for good. The riddle was also a clear declaration of Samson’s life for his people and the plan of God.

Walking By Faith

“. . . for we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Cor 5:7 NASU).

The Parable of the Resistance Fighter is a powerful illustration of walking by faith. “In time of war in an occupied country, a member of the resistance meets one night a stranger who deeply impressed him. They spend the night together in conversation. The stranger tells the partisan that he himself is on the side of the resistance – indeed that he is in command of the resistance, and urges the partisan to have faith in him no matter what happens.
