The Highest Motivation

Bible Verse for Today: “For this is the love of God, that we
keep his commandments: and his commandments are not
grievous” (I John 5:2).
How do we think about the things we do for our Lord? Perhaps
we do not always do good from the highest motivation. For
example, we may attend services because we think others expect
us to go. We may help others because we know God wants us to
help them. Maybe we join a Bible class or ladies’ group because
it gives us a chance to socialize and make friends. No, there is
nothing wrong with those reasons. But do they come from the
highest motivation?

Get Away From Me!

Today’s verse: “But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down
at Jesus’ feet saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful
man, O Lord!” (Luke 5:8).
Peter and his partners had been fishing all night with no success.
Jesus uses their boat to preach from and then tells Peter to go
back out and cast the nets. So many fish are caught that both
boats are needed, and they are so full that they are near to
sinking (Luke 5:1-11).

“I Will Fear No Evil”

Ponder: What do you fear? Why?

Scripture: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me”
(Psalm 23:4a, NKJV).
As a child, I was afraid of the dark. I still don’t particularly
like it, but I’m no longer scared of it. David’s “valley of the
shadow of death” sounds dark and foreboding. Why, then,
wasn’t he afraid? Because the Lord was with him.
