Devotions for Life

Why Indeed

Text: “and about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing; and he saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle” (Matthew 20:6).

In his famous 1775 speech, Patrick Henry uttered the words, “Why stand we here idle?” Henry was suggesting that Americans were doing, basically, little or nothing, while the British were oppressing them. He was also suggesting that it was time to take a stand against oppression and bondage rather than being idle.

Orlando

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves. Nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were sanctified, buy you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” (I Corinthians 6:9-11).

Like all of you I abhor any shootings. However, I was distressed, appalled, and greatly incensed by the behavior of groups spouting hatred in the name of my Lord. Some even rejoiced that those in Orlando were killed. Yes, I know and believe that homosexuality is a sin. Sin of any kind is against God’s will.

Jesus and the Father did not call us to hate sinners. We are called to appeal to and even beg sinners, and that includes homosexuals, to be reconciled to God through Jesus. (II Corinthians 5:20). God sent His only begotten Son to make an atoning sacrifice for every single person (John 3:16). God wants sinners to return to Him. God “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (I Timothy 2:4).

The 49 people and the shooter all were created in the image of God. If they hadn’t come to God through Jesus, they were robbed of the opportunity to be reconciled to God.

We must lovingly tell all people about Jesus. We cannot exclude anyone or any group. Our Father has no list of excluded individuals. The senseless deaths hurt my Father and they hurt me. How about you?

Don’t forget that you were once a sinner. Your sins were keeping you out of God’s kingdom. Never forget that someone lovingly taught you.

Song: “Softly and Tenderly”

Loving, forgiving Father, You have forgiven me. Please open my heart to carry Your message of Jesus to all, not just a few. Help me not to exclude anyone. Help me not to hate, but love like Jesus. In my loving Savior’s name. Amen.

Integrity

Bible Verse for Today: “Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?” (Job 4:6).

Job is known mostly for his faith in God no matter what happened to him. His friend Eliphaz knew him for his integrity. Job was honest. He had sound moral principles and character. He walked uprightly before God and man. Why did Job have integrity? He feared God.
