Raise Your Ebenezer!

Ponder: What is an Ebenezer? Do I have one? If I do, how do I raise it?
Scripture: “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us'” (1 Samuel 7:12).
Question: What did Scrooge’s mother say while pointing to their house?
Answer: “Here I raise my Ebenezer!”
So much for humor.
In all seriousness Robert Robinson wrote the words to the hymn, “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” in 1757. Though the song now appears in various editions, with some lines omitted and others changed, all of them contain the words, “Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’ve come.” How many times have you sung those words without understanding what they mean?

Kindness Is Not Retroactive

Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

Wow, how powerfully comforting are the multitude of thoughts that begin to flow through my mind as I think about this statement made by David long ago. When we are actively engaged in doing those things that will make our calling and election sure (2 Peter 1:5-11), when we are truly seeking first the kingdom of God (Matt. 6:33), when we have set our affections on things above and are seeking those things (Col. 3:1-2), we can with calmness, quietness and peacefulness of soul pillow our heads in sleep each night.
