Devotions for Life

Dead Flies

“Dead flies make a perfumer’s oil stink, so a little foolishness is weightier than
and honor” (Ecclesiastes 10:1).
Those are the best kind, if you ask me. The live ones buzz around, irritating us, making us
reach for the fly swatter. The ancients didn’t like flies either. I wonder: did they have fly
swatters too?

Ponder: Your thoughts

Today’s verse: “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (II Corinthians 10:5).
Several years ago the acronym G.I.G.O. (Garbage In, Garbage Out) was coined. While this was said regarding computers, it can apply to what we put into our minds.

Fear of Failure

Ponder: How does being afraid to fail affect us?
Scripture: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”
(2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).
Courage is not the absence of fear, but the conquest of it. Of all the fears we must overcome, fear of failure is one of the most common. In the parable of the talents, the third servant hid the money in the ground. Rebuked for his fruitlessness, he pleaded, “Lord, I knew you to be a hard man . . . and I was afraid” (Matthew 25:24, 25). Among other things, this man feared failure.
