Devotions for Life

Moses the Patriot

“Why should the Egyptians speak saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger and
change Your mind about doing harm to Your people”
(Exodus 32:12).
The baby Moses was hidden by his family to keep him alive. He was found by the daughter of Pharaoh. His mother was able to take care of him. Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s house, but thanks to his mother, he knew who his brethren were. He even killed an Egyptian to avenge the beating of a fellow Hebrew (Exodus 2:11-12).

Raise Your Ebenezer!

Ponder: What is an Ebenezer? Do I have one? If I do, how do I raise it?
Scripture: “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us'” (1 Samuel 7:12).
Question: What did Scrooge’s mother say while pointing to their house?
Answer: “Here I raise my Ebenezer!”
So much for humor.
In all seriousness Robert Robinson wrote the words to the hymn, “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” in 1757. Though the song now appears in various editions, with some lines omitted and others changed, all of them contain the words, “Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’ve come.” How many times have you sung those words without understanding what they mean?

Kindness Is Not Retroactive

Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”
I would guess that you still remember some of those lessons you learned in elementary school. Such as; don’t challenge a person who is 7 inches taller that you to a tether ball match for “all the marbles;” don’t try to slide into home plate when the catcher already has the ball; never brag about that which you have no bragging rights; never take a Valentine card seriously (That cute little girl/boy gave a Valentine to everybody else in class).
