Fear of Failure

Ponder: How does being afraid to fail affect us?
Scripture: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”
(2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).
Courage is not the absence of fear, but the conquest of it. Of all the fears we must overcome, fear of failure is one of the most common. In the parable of the talents, the third servant hid the money in the ground. Rebuked for his fruitlessness, he pleaded, “Lord, I knew you to be a hard man . . . and I was afraid” (Matthew 25:24, 25). Among other things, this man feared failure.

It’s Not About Me

Ponder: Who is the main character in this drama we call life?
Scripture: “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4 NKJV).
I remember several decades ago when the “me” books came out. They were story books you could purchase for your child and insert his/her name as the main character. That was supposed to build self-esteem. (“Wow, here’s a story that’s all about me!”) Maybe that was good in some ways, but mostly we raised a generation of self-absorbed people! Even in the church, it’s difficult for some to grasp that “it’s not about me!” In our consumer-driven society, we’re accustomed to other people catering to our whims. After all, if they don’t, we can just take our business elsewhere. I’m sorry to say that mentality is all too evident in the church!

An Old Hotel

“And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13).

The six-story historical hotel was decked with Christmas finery. Outside, the front of the building, the bushes and trees, and every light pole shined with lights of various colors. Life-size angels hung over its porch and steps. At night, the front and outside took your breath away. Inside, large decorated trees, lights, Santas, snowmen, and teddy bears filled the foyer and hallways. Decorated Christmas scenes and trees took center stage in every banquet room and convention center. Indeed, she was a grand old lady, beautiful to see.
